The Physical Screening Test (PST) is a general indicator of whether you have the baseline fitness necessary to enter BUD/S. Training for the PST can be difficult though if you’re not sure of how much and how often you should swim, run, and do push ups, sit ups, and pull ups. Fortunately, the NavySEALs.com SEAL-Fit PST Individual Training Program (ITP), which will be launched shortly, is based on proven strategies for becoming faster and stronger in the areas tested by the PST. Issues such as exercise adaptation response and recovery are addressed in the schedule by prescribing a variety of exercises and tempos, so that there are maximal results from the training without it to becoming stale and boring.
There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of books and on-line programs designed to improve fitness in the areas tested by the PST. Many of these are extremely beneficial, and it’s important to learn as much as you can about improving yourself physically and mentally before going to BUD/S. Where the NavySEALs.com SEAL-Fit PST ITP stands alone, however, is that it utilizes your own personal PST scores to generate a series of workouts that will challenge you to YOUR limit. There are no other programs that provide this kind of individualized approach to training. As you grow in your abilities, the PST Preparation Workout grows with you.
The components and minimum scores for the PST are as follows:
500 Yard Swim (Sidestroke and/or Breaststroke): 12:30
Rest 10 minutes
Max Pushups in 2 minutes: 42
Rest 2 minutes
Max Situps in 2 minutes: 50
Rest 2 minutes
Max Pullups: 6
Rest 10 minutes
1.5 Mile Run in shorts and running shoes: 11:30
It’s important to remember that every individual that ever entered BUD/S has successfully performed this test to at least the minimum scores above, and yet traditionally more than 70% of them did not complete training.
Numbers Don’t Lie
Research has shown that in the past, success at BUD/S correlates to how well a candidate performs on the PST. The following statistics were compiled from previous BUD/S classes and gives the percentage of candidates who started BUD/S and graduated based on their PST scores.
