Truth Through Running

Truth Through Running
"The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the true person that I am." This remark by George Sheehan's tells us that humans were not made to be stationary objects behind desks or computers. Mankind was made in order to pursue, to chase, and to run. We were made to run because in this chase our true self emerges. The true self is not just one particular entity, but a combination of three things: the mind, body, and the spirit or soul. These three items are each "unique keys" which have to be used in unison with each other when trying to unlock the doors to our true self. It is in running we emerge as a whole and become our true self because we exercise each of these three integral parts: the body, the mind, and the soul.
If our destination is our true self, how does one get to their goal? Mind and spirit do not literally move us from behind our desks; these two things are just principles in which guides us. It is our body that carries us, and to not have a physically fit body to run through the obstacle is detrimental to our goals in that we will never be able to reach true being. The human body is comparable to driving a car in which the soul is the gas and the mind is the driver that is leading the car on its way to the true self, or destination. The soul may be full and the mind ready to go, but with a broken down car one will never make it to the true self. This is why we were given a body in which its design enables us to run. We were given legs as our pistons which move up and down, transmitting power created by the exploding fuel of our heart and lungs. The lungs, in which our legs carry, breathe in the reality surrounding us which gives us the courage to continue our pursuit. And our heart provides us with the beat of life. Just as Viking drummers on Nordic war ships provide their warriors with motivation and energy to conquer; our hearts motivates us to go and run straight into our personal battles with our thoughts to conquer our true self. The human body can only do so much and that is when it is up to the mind and spirit to take over.
The mind is the human conscience that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination. Today, society surrounding us puts a large amount of strain on our minds clouding our thoughts; creating barriers for which we are taught not to pass. These obstructions are keeping us restrained from finding our true self. Running helps alleviate stress from our minds. Since running has no walls or places restricting us from running, we are taught that there no barriers in our minds also. From then on, we are able to wander in search of our selves freely. When people run, they often experience a "runner's high", in this "high" the runner is at peace with their true self. This high lets one think with a clear and calm mind letting go of outside influences allowing the true self to emerge. It is in full calmness and peace that you experience the unchanging, eternal pure being which is the true self. Clearing the mind allows your spirit to run free.
We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves. The more restricted our society and work become, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom. No one can say, 'You must not run faster than this, or jump higher than that.' The human spirit is incapable of being overcome, subdued, or vanquished; it is indomitable. The soul is nothing but a curious extension of our true self. Our true self reflects through our soul and tries to emerge and show us our potential. As George Sheehan said "There are the many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my life. But mostly, I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint. So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion by running, and you will become the true person you are meant to be."
Keep Running.
