Great I knew that would get everyones attention.... I've gone through this website and it raises alot of questions. Now granted I'm on a "Navy SEALs" website. So everyone logging on is going to believe that the SEALs are gods gifts to the military.... First off I just have to say that I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Navy SEALs. I know a few personally and they are no quit and tough as nails. But I think that the movies have many people confused ( as ive noticed from these polls). First off lets dive into training... Bar none the most extensive training in the military is the Army Special Forces aka. The Green Berets. Green Berets go through a little more than twice the amount of training than SEALs do. BUDs lasts anywhere from 5-6 months. Now that is alot of training especially with how physically and mentally rigorous the program is. Green Berets endure anywhere from 18-24 months of training... And it is just as physical and mentally draining than the SEALs. On top of it all Green Berets have to go through selection. So you have to do a hell of alot more than just "Survive" to be a green beret. You need to be the cream of the crop. You need to be highly intellgent ( the proof being to need to be bi-lingual, if you are not then you have to learn a second language.... SEALs do not)

So if the Green Berets are so much more difficult to get into , why are there more Berets and SEALs? Thats a good question, and I will answer by saying this "Not for long". The reason being the Navy is instituting a new "Mentoring Program" and basically you have to attend this program ( if you're going to attempt the SEAL challenge) for approximately 3-5 months before you ship off to basic training. This program has you working in the class room as well as physically to get you in shape for BUDs etc... The attrition rate for BUDs is roughly 80-90%. ( Berets its 78%) With this new program , 80% of participants that attend make it through BUDs and SEAL training.... For years SEAL instructors have been known to try their best to get you to quit. Special Forces instructors have the same attitude but they will recycle you alot sooner and give you another shot at becoming SF alot quicker than the SEALs do.... So with this new mentoring program you will see alot more Active Navy SEALs than ever before.

The reason I'm writing this ( and I know i'll get crap for it) is because the movies and media will try and make you believe that the Navy SEALs are the most extreme military unit ever. They are great at what they do. Throw 8 of them behind enemy lines and have them live for months and train indigeious personel. You think they are the best team for the job? Well they arent, The Green Berets are. If a Black Hawk goes down carrying highly sensitive material and crew members Do you think the SEALs are the best team for that? Well they arent, Air Force Pararescue are..... This one is sure to piss some people off... 10 hostiles have 3 POW's held captive in a secured compound, you think the SEALs are the best team for the job? Well they definitely arent in this case The Deltas are.... What I'm trying to say is that SEALs are great but they arent the entire Special Forces for the military. Everyone interested should look into the other Special Forces groups and see what they do.... It just might surprise you. You'll probably find that you cant find alot of info on the net about the Green Berets, Delta Force, Air Force pararescue and Marine Force Recon. Thats because they dont feel the need to put out numerous documentaries and movies showcasing just how "Great" they are. If anyone disagrees, please I'd love to hear your feddback

I can't put this in military form, so I will do my best. I know you want understand because this is a woman's view.  You have 2 childern 2 and 4 and your 6 mos. pregnant with your third when you divorce. Her choice not his. You give up everything for those children and you don't have and instructor helping you.  You can't take anything over because if you do make a mistake you don't get a do over. I admire military people but you aren't the only ones that have it tough.

You must be pretty insecure to have to come on this site just for the sake of pissing people off. If the berets are so much better than the SEALs than congratulations, keep it to yourself, but the fact that you have to come on here and talk about it is just disrespectful and all it shows me is your imaturity. We are all fighting for the same side and you need to respect that even if "the green berets are the best" or whatever.  And you make a good point when you say QUOTE "For years SEAL instructors have been known to try their best to get you to quit. Special Forces instructors have the same attitude but they will recycle you alot sooner and give you another shot at becoming SF alot quicker than the SEALs do" END QUOTE.  You may be able to recycle berets and build them up again, but the reason there is no turning back once you quit SEALs is that you cant make just anyone into a SEAL maybe unlike the berets.  SEALs are born and the instructors are just looking amongst the masses for these blessed individuals who will never quit and were born to serve our country.

I dont want to argue, thats not why I am leaving a comment. I just thought I would say, If you are coming on here just to brag about your love for the Army then go join them...These guys (The SEALs, and Green Beret) are risking there lives right now over seas, so respect them both! Both BUD/S and training for the Green Beret are tough. You got your point across!

To jumpingbum. Yeah you're right it did kind of turn into a  pissing match. I had no intention of revealing my qualifications. I have no more to say on the subject I think you said it all in your last entry. Thank you.

mdwelke I could be wrong, but last time I checked, SF guys do NOT have to have a Ranger tab to get into SFAS.  Where did you get that one? Is that a new requirement? I am SO confused...  I write that because Rangers refer to SF guys as "long tabbers" and go out of their way to flunk them out of Ranger School.  There is a long standing rivalry between the 2 groups... Has something changed?  And, no, they haven't always had to have 'years' of infantry training before they go to selection (although, this IS in flux.)  There are "SF babies"  - guys who go to SF straight out of Basic.  This was true in the early 90's and it was true again recently.  Dude, I have great respect for you because of the training you've gone through, but I think (I believe, IMHO) you need to check your facts more carefully.  If I'm wrong?  I'm the first one to apologize...

I did research on SF guys about 15 years ago while I was in the Army. I don't mean personal research, I mean research in exercise physiology.  The men I knew at that time were "quiet professionals."  The new batch, from what I've heard is very different.  I would say that having tasted a little of that difference here?  I am sad.  Sigh.

You're a brave man. :)  Having friends who are SF, I have nothing to disagree about, but you're in my prayers for the crap you'll get from other folks... :)

Haha Guess what Faithy? You just proved my point. A meat head like yourself couldnt possibly comprehend what it truly takes to get into SF or the SEALs. Ive seen a thousand guys like yourself. You wanted so badly to be a SEAL but never attempted or never had the perseverance to get through BUDs. I don't know what I'm talking about? I spent 6 months prior to enlisting, inquiring about the SEALs and Berets. Why did I choose Army Special Forces? First off because I dont have blonde hair and I dont weigh 165 pounds. But primarily because you learn more, its far more difficult, and the missions are far more humanitarian.... Where did you come up with the 45-65% DOR before the Q course? It is actually averaging at about 78% and you know why? Because selection is the most intense training any soldier will have to endure. Take it from someone that has actually been there , not someone that trains SF guys how to clean toilets. Even if you do complete selection it doesnt necessarily mean you're going to get to the Q course.

I came on this site to get a few SEAL wanna bes rowled up and it apparently worked. To mdwelke your info on the Green Berets (by the way I refer to them as berets because 90% of people dont know what Army Special Forces are) is unbelievably incorrect.  I'm what is refered to as an 18X. I walked in off the street and started my special forces training after basic, jump school, sopc etc. I didnt have any prior military background and I didnt have to be Sgt. We're called SF babies by the other Special Forces guys. So get your facts straight. Also the reason why you SEAL wannabe's cant go on a Army Special Forces website is because there arent any. The only ones you'll find are made as memorials to our fallen brothers. Not glorified pages dedicated to SEAL wannabes and selling T-shirts.

So to you both, haha Faithy especially, go pick up a magazine or pop in your G.I Jane DVD and keep living the dream fellas, you guys are doing a bang up job.

Where do I start?  How about this?  You are so typical of someone who can play online, read but not comprehend, and let your mouth overload your ass.

I AM NOT, WAS NOT a SEAL.  But guess what my friend? I have trained SEALs, Rangers, (your) Army Special Forces,  SWAT and other SPECOPS types for about 30 years. Both in the military and as a civilian.

In all your deep and revealing research did a particular unit's "Mission" ever come up?  If the SEALs and (Army) Special Forces had identical mission profiles, why did President Kennedy authorize them both at almost the same time in 1962?

Your stats are not valid; they are bogus!  I train Army SF candidates right now. 45-65% either washout or DOR before the actual "Q-Course" begins.

When you compare the Navy/Army training times, did you consider the Navy's "A-School"?  That's inaddition to BUD/S, post BUD/S SEAL qualification & Jump School, etc.  Did you know about 1/3 of the instructors at the Army Combat Diving School are Navy?  Most are SEALs.

How about the movies?  Ever hear of "The Green Berets" with John Wayne? The Army provided all the tech assistance, including military hardware and active duty troops for this movie that was produced at Ft. Bragg.  It came out during the Vietnam War.  This was many years before 90% of the public ever heard of the SEALs.

I can only echo what mdwelke said.  Kinda looks like a SEAL might have stole your thunder and/or girlfriend.

Couple other things stud.  I don't care what you think of my feedback, because you're probably not worthy of the effort.  This is a site dedicated to the warriors that serve this Country during this time of crisis as SEALs.  You were not invited here, and you have violated the spirit of NavySeals.com.

I work with Army Special Forces on a regular basis (read my last blog).  Guess what sport? They don't especially like being  called "Green Berets" by wannabes not in the SF community...

where did you get that 80% of the guys going through the new mentoring program pass?  The first group that went through mentoring just began phase one.

Sounds to me like you have a major axe to grind.  I am very good at reading people, and my take on you is a SEAL has showed you up in some form or fashion.  You conveniently left out (or maybe you just don't know much about the military other than what you read) that Green Beret's have years of infantry training before they EVER go through selection.  Plus, correct me if I am wrong, they have to have a Ranger tab, which means even more specialized training.  You have to be a sargeant or about to be a Green Beret correct?  That's a minimum of 5 years.  SEALS go from standing still to fully ready to deploy in roughly 3 years.  That's taking a bluewater sailor and turning him into a highly trained warrior in that period of time.

You just don't survive and make it through Bud/s.  You have to excel.  There are many college grads going through Bud/s; many of those Naval Academy officers.  If you think their intelligence level is low, well I don't know what to say.

What's sad is people like you come on a SEAL site and try to convince us that we are over hyped.  We aren't on an Army site telling people how weak their people are.

Why don't you join the Navy and put in your package to Bud/s.  If it is so easy, we should see you on the front lines in about 3 years backing up the smack you are talking.

Good Luck
