If you have trouble opening above, check the spacing on the link-I noticed some of the letters spaced out wrong (usually the word bandana)-close them up and it goes to his fundraiser.

Read this Hero's story and see what he and his family are going through.  I got one of these bandanas-they're awesome!  They are made by SEALs with 100% of the money going to this family.

If you're going to hang here, support the people this is all about.

God Bless America....

I am Not/was Not A SEAL...
DATE: 10/09/2009 14:16:06 / MOOD: accomplished

I would like to stress to the members here and those just passing thru, that I have NEVER served as a United States Navy UDT/SEAL...

I served with pride in the U.S. Navy, as a police officer, federal investigator, and finally a Contract Agent to one of the infamous "Alphabet Agencies" within our Government...

I had the honor to train UDT-6, SEAL Teams 2 & 4 Operators as well as Army Special Forces & SWAT Team tactical Dive Teams.

While "on contract" with the Government, while in a "UC legend", I used my experience with the Teams as part of my cover.  The "badguys" were made to think I was a former SEAL.  My objective;  to be accepted as someone with combat & SPECOPs experience (which I had), and to gain their confidence and keep illegal weapons and explosives from making it into the hands of militant organizations within the United States.

After over ten years of active "UC" contract work, I was IOD (Injured On Duty) in 1983 while on such an operation and remain on Federal Disability.

Why this letter?  I am proud to have several friends within the SEAL community.  My Boot Camp is based upon the BUD/S format, and I have referred many young people to the Military SPECOPs pipelines.

I do not want any mis-understandings; I am proud of my service and the efforts I putforth on behalf of our government. I am proud and appreciative of my association with the professionals here and do want to take away from what they lay on the line everyday.

I am perfectly happy with providing proof of my government service to the staff here.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks, Dennis "DC"

PS: No; this is NOT a Joke & and I'm NOT writing a book..(LOL!)

Semper Fi Col. McMahon
DATE: 07/19/2009 17:48:11 / MOOD: peaceful

What an odd and amazing country we live in.  As I recall, Ed McMahons passing was briefly mentioned on TV & in print, but we have been saturated with Michael Jackson for days now.  One would hope that down deep in the heart of our citizens, the Ed McMahons are still our true heroes.

However, if they are not, history tells us that all successful societies have been short lived and all died from within.

COLONEL ED HAS DIED

He wanted to be a Marine fighter pilot.  The US was building up their military force, but they were not at war yet and the Navy required all its potential Navy and Marine pilots to have two years of college. So Ed started classes at Boston College .

When Pearl Harbor was attacked the Army and the Navy both dropped the college requirement and Ed applied to the Marines.  His primary flight training was in Dallas and then he went to Pensacola , Florida .  He was carrier qualified, which means he knew how to perform a controlled crash of his single engine fighter, onto the rolling deck of a Navy floating runway.

It took Ed almost two years to get through all the Navy flight training.  His problem was he was a very good pilot and the Marines needed flight instructors.  He had a great command presence and public speaking ability, which landed him in the classroom, training new baby Marine pilots.

His orders to the Pacific fleet and the chance to fly combat missions off a carrier came in the spring of 1945, on the same day the Atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima   Of course his orders where changed.  He never went to sea and he was out of the Marines in 1946.

Ed stayed in the USMC as a reserve officer.  He became a successful personality in the new TV medium, after the war.  His Marine command presence helped.  He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.  He never got to fly his fighter aircraft, but he saw his share of raw combat.  He flew the Cessna O-1E Bird Dog, which is a single engine slow-moving unarmed plane. He functioned as an artillery spotter for the Marine batteries on the ground and as a forward controller for the Navy & Marine fighter / bombers who flew in on fast moving jet engines, bombed the area and were gone in seconds.  Captain Ed was still circling the enemy looking for more targets, all the time taking North Korean and Chinese ground fire.

He stayed with the Marines as a reserve officer and retired in 1966 as a Colonel.

The world knows Ed as Ed McMahon of the Johnny Carson, Tonight Show.  One night I was watching the show when the subject of Colonel McMahon earning a number of Navy Air Medals came up. Carson, a former Navy officer, understood the significance of these medals, but McMahon shrugged it off, saying that if you flew enough combat missions they just sort of gave them to you. McMahon flew 85 combat missions over North Korea ; he earned every one of those Air Medals.  The casualty rate, for flying forward air controllers in Korea sometimes exceeded 50% of a squadron’s manpower.  McMahon was lucky to  have gotten home from that war.

Once a Marine, always a Marine.

When the public was spitting (taking their personal safety into their own hands) at Marines on the streets of Southern California during Vietnam , Colonel McMahon was taking Marines off the streets and into his posh Beverley Hills home.  I spoke to a retired Marine aircrew member the day Colonel McMahon died and he personally remembered seeing McMahon at numerous Marine Air Bases in California in the 1960s.  He was known for going to the Navy hospitals and visiting the wounded Marines and Sailors from this country’s conflicts, even in the last years of his life.

Colonel McMahon presented awards and decorations to fellow Marines and attended many a Marine ceremony and the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball.  He stayed true to his Corps as a board member of the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund and as the honorary chairman of the National Marine Corps Aviation Museum .  After retiring from the Marine Reserve, one night on the Johnny Carson show, members of the California Air National Guard came on stage.

Colonel McMahon was commissioned a Brigadier General in the Air Guard in front of millions of Americans who watched it happen live.  You will not see anything like that on TV anymore.

The three core values of a United States Marine are; honor, courage and commitment.  This is what a Marine is taught from the first day of training and this is what that Marine believes.  That was Colonel Edward P. McMahon Jr. USMCR Retired. Before he was a national figure he was a true combat hero and a patriot the nation needed then and this country needs now.

Your war is over.  Thank you Colonel McMahon     Semper Fi sir.

The Passing of a True Warrior...
DATE: 11/21/9985 12:45:44 / MOOD: melancholy

Col. McDonald "Don" Valentine, Airborne/Ranger, Vietnamese Ranger Advisor has passed away.  My Brother-in-Arms, fellow Vietnamese Ranger, Biet Dong Quan "Black Tiger", Ranger Advisor passed away this week after a long and painful battle with the effects of Agent Orange (young pups check your Vietnam War history books...).

Don was a true warrior in every sense of the word.  He covered my six in many situations and I know that not for him, I would have preceeded him.

Checkout his website at:

 http://www.soft-vision.com/ranger/index2.html< /p>

while it's still around.  Please leave a message in the guestbook, his wonderful wife Ling would be so grateful.

Fellow Vietnam Vets, all veterans of conflict, please toast him, and know that a true Airborne Ranger "Has Led the Way...!"

Thank you...

Post High School Military Careers
DATE: 02/10/2009 13:37:55 / MOOD: none, or other

Most of us "older" Navy Veterans here recieve many questions about Naval careers, especially in SPECWAR.

The questions are sincere and for the most part valid and interesting.  Here are a few suggestions.

  • The blogs are great & open many doors,
  • Check the career sites here at NS.com,
  • Talk to your local Recruiters,
  • talk to your FAMILY!!!
  • Be realistic-I sometimes don't answer mail from a 14 year old who wants to be a SEAL, USNA grad, Pilot, & Merc all within 4 years of getting their GED!
  • Ask yourself "why (?)" you want these things-if it's part of the present SOC "fad" think again, it's not a game. This is serious stuff and you can die or get someone else killed!

The answers may lead you in many different directions.  I work with high school DEPers from the Navy, Marine Corps & Army. These are motivated and dedicated 11th & 12th graders.  If you're a HS junior-get in the DEPer Program & get a feel for the real deal and professional guidence on your military carrer.

I've met some great operators here who'd I have cover my six anytime.  Just be selective on who you rely on for intell, and remember, the bottom line is it's your decision-your life!

Career operators like "Frogman80", "Mark" (NS.com), & "Seaspectre" are experienced veterans that can provide valuable input to helping you along the way.  This input is based upon their training and years of experience in the field. They/we want to help you in any way we can!

This, however, does not take the place of the Navy Recruiters that are trained to help you.  Just let them know what you're interested in and they can advise as to if your goals are realistic and if you qualify...

Good Luck & CARPE DIEM!!!!

A Christmas Poem....
DATE: 12/24/2008 08:34:42 / MOOD: thoughtful

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE,   IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.      I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,  AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.     I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,  A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL,  NO PRESENTS,  NOT EVEN A TREE.     NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,  JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,  ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES  OF FAR DISTANT LaNDS.  WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,  A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND.     FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,  IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,  I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,  ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.     THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,  SILENT, ALONE,  CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.     THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,  THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,  NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.     WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I HAD READ?  CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,  THE FLOOR FOR A BED?     I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,  OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS SO WILLING TO FIGHT.     SOON ROUND THE WORLD,   THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,  AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.     THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,  LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.     I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE,  ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.     THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,  I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.     THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, 'SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;  I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,  I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,  MY LIFE IS MY GOD,  MY COUNTRY,  MY CORPS!'      THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,  I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,  I CONTINUED TO WEEP.     I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,  SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.     I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,  THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.     THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,  WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,  WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,  IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY,  ALL IS SECURE.'     ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.  'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!  AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

This poem was written by a Marine.
