Great I knew that would get everyones attention.... I've gone through this website and it raises alot of questions. Now granted I'm on a "Navy SEALs" website. So everyone logging on is going to believe that the SEALs are gods gifts to the military.... First off I just have to say that I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Navy SEALs. I know a few personally and they are no quit and tough as nails. But I think that the movies have many people confused ( as ive noticed from these polls). First off lets dive into training... Bar none the most extensive training in the military is the Army Special Forces aka. The Green Berets. Green Berets go through a little more than twice the amount of training than SEALs do. BUDs lasts anywhere from 5-6 months. Now that is alot of training especially with how physically and mentally rigorous the program is. Green Berets endure anywhere from 18-24 months of training... And it is just as physical and mentally draining than the SEALs. On top of it all Green Berets have to go through selection. So you have to do a hell of alot more than just "Survive" to be a green beret. You need to be the cream of the crop. You need to be highly intellgent ( the proof being to need to be bi-lingual, if you are not then you have to learn a second language.... SEALs do not)
So if the Green Berets are so much more difficult to get into , why are there more Berets and SEALs? Thats a good question, and I will answer by saying this "Not for long". The reason being the Navy is instituting a new "Mentoring Program" and basically you have to attend this program ( if you're going to attempt the SEAL challenge) for approximately 3-5 months before you ship off to basic training. This program has you working in the class room as well as physically to get you in shape for BUDs etc... The attrition rate for BUDs is roughly 80-90%. ( Berets its 78%) With this new program , 80% of participants that attend make it through BUDs and SEAL training.... For years SEAL instructors have been known to try their best to get you to quit. Special Forces instructors have the same attitude but they will recycle you alot sooner and give you another shot at becoming SF alot quicker than the SEALs do.... So with this new mentoring program you will see alot more Active Navy SEALs than ever before.
The reason I'm writing this ( and I know i'll get crap for it) is because the movies and media will try and make you believe that the Navy SEALs are the most extreme military unit ever. They are great at what they do. Throw 8 of them behind enemy lines and have them live for months and train indigeious personel. You think they are the best team for the job? Well they arent, The Green Berets are. If a Black Hawk goes down carrying highly sensitive material and crew members Do you think the SEALs are the best team for that? Well they arent, Air Force Pararescue are..... This one is sure to piss some people off... 10 hostiles have 3 POW's held captive in a secured compound, you think the SEALs are the best team for the job? Well they definitely arent in this case The Deltas are.... What I'm trying to say is that SEALs are great but they arent the entire Special Forces for the military. Everyone interested should look into the other Special Forces groups and see what they do.... It just might surprise you. You'll probably find that you cant find alot of info on the net about the Green Berets, Delta Force, Air Force pararescue and Marine Force Recon. Thats because they dont feel the need to put out numerous documentaries and movies showcasing just how "Great" they are. If anyone disagrees, please I'd love to hear your feddback
