Special Operations Forces of the United States military are conducting combat drills in Alaska to adapt to the environment and learn more about it.
Navy SEALs and Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen operators, Green Berets and elite Army aviators, and Air Commandos recently trained in Alaska for over a month. Arctic Edge 22 is the United States military’s premier exercise in Arctic combat. The Navy SEALs performed a free-fall drop into an Arctic Ocean ice flow and linked up with the USS Pasadena. US special operations have conducted training within and outside the Arctic to familiarize themselves with the circumstances they would face there. The Special Operations Winter Mountain Operator Course is offered twice a year in Colorado as one of their training options.
Participants acquire winter-warfare survival skills, such as how to travel in icy circumstances and small-unit tactics for the Arctic environment. Command Special Operations. Arctic Circle’s abundant resources and more direct sea connections transform the region into attractive geopolitical real estate. China has also shown an interest in the area, referring to itself as a “near-Arctic” state and sending observers to Arctic Council meetings.
