Metzger returned fire and rushed to the aid of two of his own members amidst the constant machine gun firing. Despite being injured by a grenade, Metzger carried them away from enemy fire.  He then refused to be carried to the medical evacuation helicopter so personnel could focus on security after he was wounded again.
