In recent years the special operations forces community has dealt with more “gray area” behavior. With all the high-profile scandals involving the SOF community, U.S. Special Operations Command was urged to review these problems’ underlying issues. The review was launched in 2019 and the results were released in January 2020. Since the review’s result, SOCOM has changed its force structure, cut deployments significantly, and has centralized leadership as well. It has even changed how it trains operators and has emphasized ethical conduct, specifically in morally uncertain environments. Robert Mitchell, associate dean for Joint Special Operations University, stated that moral choices made in the SOF world are “definitely not black and white.”
