Forty Special Air Service (SAS) members voluntarily requested to remain in Afghanistan after last week’s tragic suicide bombing that killed 13 US service members and as many as 170 Afghan civilians at Hamid Karzai International Airport. The group intends to establish a base near the Afghan-Pakistan border and conduct covert operations against the Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) who claimed responsibility for the attack. IS-K is primarily originating in eastern Afghanistan, and they have demonstrated they are willing to use extreme force on their enemies. The planned SAS base will also be utilized by the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service, the US Army’s Delta Force, and the US Navy SEALs according to this report.
