A retired Naval officer who lost both of his legs to an explosion in Afghanistan won his 2nd Paralympic gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. cross-country ski relay team on Sunday. Retired Navy SEAL Dan Cnossen, 41, originally from Topeka, Kansas and his three teammates had the fastest time in the mixed 4×2.5km relay on the final day of the Beijing 2022 Games. The Chinese and Canadian teams finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Cnossen sustained his leg injury in September 2009 while on deployment in Afghanistan, stepping on an improvised explosive device during a nighttime assault in Helmand province.
