World War II, in my opinion, was fought by a great generation of soldiers, sailors, and airmen; some of the most dedicated and honorable men and women the world has ever known. There are so many stories of bravery and heroism that took place during this period; they are immeasurable. The Naval Combat Demolition Teams and Underwater Demolition Teams were definitely an important chapter of this rich history. There were many operators that took part in daring missions, including the clearing of the beaches at Normandy as well as the swimmer survey of the beach conditions and sea bottom of Iwo Jima. Some were recognized for their heroic actions, many were not. One naval operator during this period was awarded the Navy Cross twice; once for disarming a Japanese bomb at Pearl Harbor, and the second for his involvement on two separate reconnaissance missions of fortified enemy positions during the battle of Saipan and Tinian Island. The question for today is this: What was the name of this individual, and what nickname do many call him today because of his contributions to Naval Combat Demolition?
