Navy SEAL Missing Off Kaena Point Identified

The Navy announced today the name of the Navy SEAL missing since February 19th as 33 year old Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Matthew John Leathers of Woodland, California.  Leathers is a member of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 (SDVT-1) based out of Pearl Harbor.  Leathers enlisted in the Navy on August 11, 1998 and checked into SDVT-1 on August 4, 2004.  Leathers was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the  Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

The SEAL’s family has been notified on the mainland, the Navy stated.

Reports from the Coast Guard state that the search area last Thursday immediately after the SEAL went missing had 8 – 9 foot seas and 30 mph winds.
