Women may be able to start training as Navy SEALs by March 2016 as well as within other special operations combat units under plans set to be announced by the Pentagon. The plans call for the same physical and mental standards to be required for both men and women desiring to become a member of one of the elite. Official word is supposed to be announced later today.
In January of 2013, then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey signed an order that cleared limitations on where and how women could fight for their country. They also required the services to develop plans to set the change in motion.
Of the more than 6,700 U.S. service members who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 150 have been women.
