SEALFIT – The Positivity Project

August 24, 2013

Last week I was invited to be the inaugural guest on Kenny Kane’s new internet radio show, titled “The Positivity Project” available for free on iTunes.

Kenny is a good friend who has completed the Kokoro Camp and also partnered with disabled athlete Corey Reed at the Transition Possible 20X. He’s a big fan of SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind, and intends to share the message, in his own words and way, through this new podcast project.

The show was a blast – done in front of a live audience of CrossFitters at CFLA with owner and another friend, Andy Petranek, in attendance. If you have some time the podcast is a good listen. One interesting exchange during the show was the discussion about how maintaining an “other focus” keeps us present and positive.

I believe this is the holy grail of grit when times are tough. You see, the wandering mind prefers to linger in the future or the past. In these time domains, the potential for both positivity and negativity lurks. However, untrained, the mind veers toward a negativity bias, seeing fear, failure and pain as dominant themes. Training the mind and emotions to be positive through internal dialogue and imagery is an important step.

But, what if we could shortcut that, ensuring that we are both positive and energized, while serving our teammates? What happens when we get out of our head and into our heart, as when we sincerely help a teammate?

When we are acting from our hearts with sereneness then we temporarily short circuit our critical, wandering mind. In this awareness orientation the wandering mind cannot be in the future or the past – it is stuck squarely in the “now moment” of service.

In these moments of pure presence we find our greatest power as we channel positive energy to others. The amazing thing is this – that positive energy initially directed at our teammate comes right back to us in an amplified manner.

So by taking your eyes off yourself and putting them on your teammates, you are actually helping yourself though the suffering and charging yourself with positive energy.

Enjoy the podcast then train hard, stay safe and be present! –Coach Divine
