In the complete 60 Minutes interview, Anderson Cooper speaks with “blood brothers,” former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and Afghan villager Mohammad Gulab.
Luttrell told Anderson Cooper that it was Gulab who saved his life, protected him from the Taliban, and helped him get rescued after Luttrell’s four-man SEAL team was attacked by a far superior force in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. Teammates Dietz, Murphy, and Axelson lost their lives in the firefight, along with the entire quick reaction force that responded to the team’s call for help, making this at the time the single largest loss of life for Naval Special Warfare.
Luttrell was the only survivor, his life saved in part to the actions of Gulab and a traditional Pashtun code of honor called “Pashtunwali.”
Eight years after that fateful day, Luttrell and Gulab remain close. Gulab visits Luttrell on his family ranch in Texas. The two often sit in complete silence, but it is clear that Luttrell and Gulab have an immense bond, one forged in blood and battle.
