GM2 Danny Dietz was killed June 28, 2005 while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Kunar province, Afghanistan. Also killed during this operation, known as Operation Red Wings, were Lt. (SEAL) Michael P. Murphy and STG2 (SEAL) Matthew G. Axelson.
