What Patriotism Means to Me – By Molly Hagerman
What does patriotism mean to me? Patriotism is my love and loyalty to my country. As the daughter of a former Navy SEAL, I am expected to show my gratitude, love, and devotion to my country. My father has me recite the Pledge of Allegiance every night with my little sister and brother before bed. I know that pledge by heart. When I was little, this pledge was nothing but words to me. Now, I know the true meaning of the pledge to my country. We recited this pledge over and over again not to memorize it, but to know how our soldiers have given their lives to our country. The patriots didn’t fight to the death against Great Britain just for bloodshed! No! They fought for freedom to practice their religion, run their own government, and do what they thought was right, without the supervision of Great Britain. This is true patriotism.
Anyone can show patriotism by donating to our troops, celebrating homecomings, celebrating the Fourth of July, and even wearing T-shirts! When people show patriotism, this is them showing love, devotion, and dedication to their country. Why do people show patriotism? They show patriotism because they LOVE their country. Whether the country is America, France, or Italy, patriotism is the same for all. It doesn’t matter if you’re from a different country, patriotism is a needed quality. You can LIKE another country, but you must always be loyal to your home country.
When you show patriotism, think of all of the troops who gave their lives fighting for your country and way of life. That is what I think of when I am feeling patriotic. You can show patriotism even by praying. I pray for my country all of the time. Come up with a prayer of your own. You don’t have to pray someone else’s prayer, pray your own! Patriotism is a blessed thing, cherish it, share it, use it with all your heart. When someone asks you, “Why do you say the Pledge Of Allegiance so often?” You say, “I am showing patriotism to my country.” I hope my essay is enough to bring back the memories of those awesome patriotic people and troops out there. Thanks to the troops!
