Future Warfare – Cyber Forces U.S. Cyber Command
Cyber Monday is in full swing, billions of dollars are traveling
through cyberspace. Slowly the brick and mortar retail outlet becomes
more and more obsolete. No need for crowded parking lots, angry
shoppers or worse, a fist fight over the newest toy trend. As our
retail landscape evolves so does the battlefield, need proof? This
past weekend Sony was hit with a massive cyber-attack. Some speculate
it was North Korea stealing unreleased content. Within 12 hours of the
hack nearly 800,000 individual IP addresses had downloaded unreleased
copies of “Annie” and “Fury”, this theft equates to nearly
$16,000,000.00 in digital content. So how does a country defend itself
and it’s enterprises from these costly attacks? Cyber Forces…
U.S. Cyber Command was created in 2010, while the program is still in
its infancy it is growing fast. Much like U.S. Special Operations
Command (established in 1986) it consists of small teams with highly
trained individuals, and much like the early days of SOF, there is
lack of cohesion and institutionalized training. So while these two
agencies may seem worlds apart, there is a lot in common and our newly
established Cyber Forces should be looking at the evolution of SOF for
guidance.
Rand Corporation’s Army Research Division has taken it a step further
and completed a study on what lessons the Future Cyber Forces can
learn from the Evolution of Special Forces.
