Future Warfare – GhostSwimmer Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV)
Over the past couple of weeks the chief of naval operations’ Rapid Innovation Cell (CRIC) project, Silent NEMO has taken to the water. A new UUV, code named Silent Nemo, is a groundbreaking study that explores the expansion of future UUV’s for the Navy.
“GhostSwimmer will allow the Navy to have success during more types of missions while keeping divers and Sailors safe,” said Michael Rufo, director of Boston Engineering’s Advanced Systems Group.
Measuring in at over 5 feet, and weighing close to 100 pounds the GhostSwimmer is designed to mimic the movements of a fish. Current tests show the vehicle can operate in 10 inches of water to 300 feet. It can operate autonomously for extended periods or it utilize a 500 foot tether.
