Nation’s elite special-ops troops bulked up in numbers, funding and missions after 9/11

The 14 years since the Sept. 11 attacks might be called the era of the in-the-shadows warrior.
The nation’s elite special-operations troops — Navy SEALs, Marine Corps Raiders, Army Rangers and Delta Force, for example — have boomed in numbers, funding and the amount of missions they are called to do.
And it looks like that may be the new normal.
It represents a sea change from earlier decades, according to longtime special operators.
“We were struggling in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ’90s to make ourselves relevant to the conventional force commanders,” said Bob Schoultz, a retired Navy SEAL captain in Imperial Beach.
