Navy SEALs Ordered To Remove Navy Jack From Uniforms

The “Don’t Tread On Me” flag or First Navy Jack has flown on naval ships throughout our history including during the American Revolutionary War.  The rattlesnake is especially significant and symbolic.  The rattle has thirteen layers, signifying the original Thirteen Colonies.

Official Navy instruction has authorized all naval ships to fly the flag throughout the duration of the War On Terror.

Why is it then that senior personnel from within WARCOM and Naval Special Warfare are putting out instructions and memos stating that Navy SEALs are no longer authorized to wear the “Don’t Tread on Me” patch on their combat uniforms along with other custom patches?

I have heard some defend this action stating that it is due to trying to maintain uniformity between the operators.  We all know that is complete garbage.  As members of special operations, we have had the ability to wear custom uniforms that often did not always match our teammates.  We also could wear our own custom patches.  These include state flag patches, unit or platoon patches, or just plain motivational patches.  From wearing blue jeans in Vietnam and non-military hunting camouflage patterns currently, to wearing the Punisher, Crusader, or Navy Jack on our uniforms or body armor, special operations personnel bring the fight to the enemy using battle symbols we feel strongly about.

Whether it be a symbol of our heritage or a sign to strike fear into our enemies, it is clear to me that someone sitting behind a desk needs to keep their politics or weaknesses away from the Teams and all other special operations personnel.

ALL:

WARCOM and GROUP TWO/ONE have pushed out the uniform policy for NWU III and any patches worn on the sleeve.

All personnel are only authorized to wear the matching “AOR” American Flag patch on the right shoulder.  You are no longer authorized to wear the “Don’t Tread On Me” patch.

Again the only patch authorized for wear is the American flag on the right shoulder. Please pass the word to all.

Thanks,

Senior Enlisted Advisor

Thanks for the news.  I will order flags and patches to be worn privately ASAP.  Go to Disneyland if you like to believe in the happy theme "It's A Small World".  Hugs and kisses for all the f'n dems.

as a former MSW in many ways it does not mean much but at the same time it means everything because those of off who have served whether is special warfare or not know this is a part of our military heritage that reminds US that our history predates the constitution of the U.S.A. and that our ancestors fought under this flag to give us the country that many of us are defending and trying to save from destruction within our Government

and to all that have never served thank you for your support of those of us that have and are presently serving regardless of branch

As a civilian--thanks, guys--I have no real foundation here, but I'd bet our special forces could not care less about this; they have more important things on which to focus, like the priorities of their current CnC?

I like that idea. The website is a great one for patches and stickers.

Not sure if your e-mail from an enlisted advisor is factual or not, but  Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Flaherty issued the following to Navy Times:

“As of September 2013, all Naval Special Warfare personnel are authorized to wear the U.S. flag and the 'Don’t Tread on me' uniform patches.

"In the past, NSW did not authorize wearing either patch unless one was deployed or in a work-up cycle. However, NSW recently sought special permission from the Chief of Naval Operations staff to wear the patches within the continental United States.”

Settled.

It is the little attacks that add up over time.  Anyone who knows anything about military history/practices knows this.  Today it is a patch, tomorrow it may be signing a pledge to follow all orders without question or leave the service.  A war is decided by knowing your enemy.  Remember to study this one and find his weaknesses.  Don't advertise them yet but start learning how to exploit/defeat them.  Civilians will need all the military patriots to help them defeat our domestic enemies.  LONG LIVE AMERICA AND HER CONSTITUTION! I have heard about as much BS from senior navy officials as I can stand. The only senior navy officiers who stay in service are the ones who kiss Obama's butt. Others with a backbone are being forced to retire. This "don't tread on me" crap smells like a Senior Navy Officier's fart who is a kiss ass!

This is just a way to demoralize the teams in an effort to cause distraction and disharmony.

It is more subterfuge and sabotage by those wanting to exert their power. It is a clandestine attack by the current administration to make military more feminine like the new covers that were proposed. Tear down the proud heritage which we so valiantly fought for through the years. Ridiculous looking girly covers. The conformity story is bogus it is political correctness crap because someone doesn't like it or it is offensive to someone. It doesn't matter what it stands for like taking the Pledge of Allegiance out of the class room years ago. Not requiring Immigrants to pledge Allegiance or even know how to speak English. And, you wonder why people don't have Allegiance to this country

Stay low, move fast, shoot first, die last, one shot, one kill, no luck, pure skill.

God Bless and help us protect our Republic, The Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment.

I don't know who actually originated this insane idea to remove the "don't tread on me" from seals uniforms, but I hope whoever did it rots in hell.  Seals are an elite group and should be able to use this phrase on their uniforms, or else have it tattooed over their hearts.  Never give in, never give up!

They don't like that the Tea Party waves this flag along with the American Flag. They are terrified that the Tea Party (basically patriotic America) is going to resurge and take the country back in next two elections. They will. Praying for the turn around for this Nation even before then. In God We Still Trust.

This is such total bullpucky. I am soooooooooo very proud to have served on board the USS Prairie (AD-15), 3/1989-3/1993 prior to her decommissioning and the USS Sierra (AD-18) 3/1993-8/1993 prior to her decommissioning as well in which both ships flew this flag on,  and to have this order issued to our SEAL teams to remove their DTOM flag patches is just total ridiculous. What is happening to our military and to our country to take away our Navy traditions. Am soooooooooooo appalled. To have served 20 years, in the Army/Army Guard/Air Force Guard and having retired from the Navy ...to hear of this crap is just beyond me. We definitely need to stand together and support and defend our Constitution against the traitor(the one in the white house) who has never served in the military, and tell him to quit demoralizing our military.

jimbritttn
jimbritttn

I call on EVERY NAVY SEAL to ignore this order and wear TWO of these patches! Tell the "Coward In Chief" that you support the CONSTITUTION, not a traitor! What will Obama do, have his gestapo round up every Navy Seal and shoot them?? IT'S TIME THAT MILITARY PEOPLE BANDED TOGETHER AND SUPPORTED THE CONSTITUTION INSTEAD OF THE TRAITOR IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

ANY SEAL THAT DOESN'T WEAR THIS PATCH IS A COWARD.

bbjerk, decisions concerning military uniforms are made by that branch of service and approved /disapproved by the Sec. Of Defense. I'm sure the president has more important things to do than worry about some patch / insigna on a uniform, or what the Marine Corp hat should look like.

@jimbritttn @Afghanistan @gsmack Exactly!  We swore an oath to defend the Constitution, not the idiot currently claiming to be a Commander-in-Chief.  When tyranny becomes the clear intent all soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, as well as all of law enforcement must remember - defend the Constitution, not necessarily your bosses!
